Aerospace epoxy primers
- Process role: Active corrosion-inhibiting pigment in qualified primer systems
- Critical parameters: Pigment grade; particle size; coating/OEM qualification; Cr(VI) compliance
Strontium chromate is a yellow inorganic chromate pigment used primarily as an active corrosion-inhibiting component in selected aerospace and high-performance coating systems. It is not a generic yellow pigment: performance depends on pigment grade, particle characteristics, binder system and substrate, while Cr(VI) regulatory and occupational-exposure controls are central to procurement.
SrCrO₄ contains chromium in the +6 oxidation state. In coating films, controlled chromate availability at the metal/coating interface contributes to passivation and suppression of corrosion reactions. Performance is formulation-dependent: pigment volume concentration, binder chemistry, pretreatment, film thickness, water uptake and substrate all influence corrosion protection. Strontium chromate therefore should be qualified as part of a complete coating system rather than purchased only by CAS number.

Strontium chromate is a hexavalent-chromium substance. Treat inhalation of pigment dust as a critical exposure pathway. Use engineering controls, appropriate respiratory protection where required by risk assessment, protective gloves/clothing, eye protection, controlled cleaning methods and compliant hazardous-waste management. Website text must never substitute for the current SDS or site Cr(VI) program.
Commercial packaging is manufacturer-specific, commonly sealed bags or drums for pigment supply. Confirm UN-approved packaging where applicable, inner liner, net weight, palletization, moisture protection, dangerous-goods declaration, route restrictions and destination-country regulatory status before shipment.

No. Its high-value industrial role is corrosion inhibition in selected coating systems; color alone is not an adequate procurement basis.
No automatic interchangeability should be assumed. Chemistry, solubility, toxicity, formulation response and qualification status differ.
No. Aerospace procurement must follow the approved coating formulation and OEM/specifier qualification route.
Cr(VI) compliance and exposure control are as important as pigment purity and coating performance.
